ASCATED, is a civil society association that has been dedicated for 30 years in Guatemala to promote the rights of people with disabilities, currently executes its actions through 3 programs including inclusive community development, inclusive education and labor inclusion and entrepreneurship, its 3 programs are aimed at improving the quality of life of people with disabilities, developing strategic lines of action such as education and training, research, development of educational materials, legislation and policies among others.

The lack of access to services and compliance with the rights of people with disabilities, empowering the population and guiding, strengthening and accompanying public and private institutions for the fulfillment of the rights of people with disabilities and their families.

At the beginning of the Association, several diagnoses were elaborated where it was determined that there was a lack of training and orientation for parents and caregivers regarding the population with disabilities, as well as a lack of information and training at the level of public and private institutions to provide adequate care to this population group, as well as the absence of public policies that support inclusion with a rights-based approach to the population with disabilities.

Impact to date

ASCATED has been a benchmark in terms of promoting the care and inclusion of people with disabilities, has worked the formation and training of human resources at the level of teachers, parents, mothers and caregivers, people with disabilities, community actors and state actors through various diplomas and courses reaching a total of approximately 5,000 people, has also promoted access to services for people with disabilities as the creation with groups of parents and teachers of the first 23 special education schools in different departments and municipalities in the country.

The size and structure depends on the projects being executed and the resources available, i.e. the number of people, equipment and materials available, and this varies according to the situation.

Location

In terms of location, we do not have our own headquarters, so it is rented depending on the resources and projects in execution. A reduction of physical space was made after the Covid pandemic, implementing other work modalities.

The financing model also varies according to the opportunities and resource management carried out by the institution.

Synergies and involvement and work with others have been increased to optimize resources, greater coverage and impact.
